Planning – Be Prepared and Informed

  • A little preparation goes a long way in the Gulf Area– ensure you have a good map and plan ahead. It’s a good idea to calculate travel times and distances between stops, even preparing alternative routes, especially when travelling during the ‘Wet’ (Nov – Apr) when rain and storms can impede travel plans and many roads may be impassable.  Check the latest road conditions.
  • Ensure you have the necessary equipment to change tyres. A digital or dial tyre pressure gauge is also recommended as some service station gauges may not be correctly calibrated.
  • Ensure that your vehicle is mechanically sound, carry a first aid kit, ample water and spares such as tyres, radiator hoses and fan belts, and a good tool kit. Ensure that your spare tyre is at the correct pressure.
  • Check out the road conditions before you set up on your journey you may need to change your plans - check Burke Shire Road Report. You may also like to visit the Queensland Traffic & Main Road Website on qldtraffic.qld.gov.au or RACQ website.
  • Keep an eye on the weather before you set off as you may need to change your travel plans. The Bureau of Meteorology radar shows the location of rain, flooded rivers and other vital information about travelling in the Gulf Area.
  • Carry extra communication devices.
